Boyfriend

Boyfriend (commonly abbreviated as BF) is the main protagonist and sole playable character of Friday Night Funkin'. He is a short, blue-haired young man characterized by his oversized cap worn backwards, white t-shirt with a red prohibition sign, and his unyielding confidence in the face of any challenge.

Appearance

Boyfriend has spiky cyan/light-blue hair partially hidden beneath a red-and-blue backwards baseball cap. He wears a plain white t-shirt featuring a red "no" symbol (🚫), blue baggy pants, and red sneakers. He's notably short compared to most other characters in the game, which is frequently played for comedic effect.

His design is intentionally simple and iconic, making him easily recognizable. His idle animation shows him bobbing to the beat with a microphone in hand, while his singing poses correspond to the four arrow directions.

Personality

Boyfriend is fearless, confident, and somewhat reckless. He is completely unfazed by demons, monsters, military threats, or supernatural entities — his only concern is winning rap battles to stay with Girlfriend. He communicates almost exclusively through "beep" and "bop" vocalizations (the synthesized vocal sounds used in gameplay).

Despite his small stature, he possesses an ego larger than most opponents can handle. He willingly challenges anyone who threatens his relationship with Girlfriend, regardless of how dangerous they might be. According to the developers, he is canonically "too stupid to be scared."

Story Role

Boyfriend appears in every week of Story Mode as the player character. His primary motivation throughout the game is to prove himself worthy of dating Girlfriend by defeating her family members and various other challengers in rap battles:

• Week 1: Challenges Daddy Dearest, Girlfriend's father, on his own stage.
• Week 2: Encounters Skid & Pump at a haunted location during Halloween.
• Week 3: Faces off against Pico, his ex-boyfriend, in a Philly alleyway.
• Week 4: Battles Mommy Mearest atop a speeding limo.
• Week 5: Takes on both parents at a Christmas mall event.
• Week 6: Gets pulled into a dating-sim video game to face Senpai and Spirit.
• Week 7: Confronts Tankman and his army on a post-apocalyptic battlefield.

Alternate Forms

Boyfriend has several visual variants throughout the game:

• Standard: His default appearance used in most weeks.
• Christmas BF: Wearing a Santa hat and winter coat in Week 5.
• Pixel BF: A retro pixel-art version that appears in Week 6's dating-sim world.
• Game Over BF: A fallen, defeated version shown during the Game Over screen, with a darkened color palette and microphone dropped.

Trivia

• Boyfriend's real name has never been officially revealed. "Keith" is a popular fan name that the developers have confirmed is not canon.
• ninjamuffin99 has confirmed that Boyfriend and Pico are canonically ex-boyfriends.
• His height is approximately 5'0" (152 cm), making him the shortest main character in the game.
• Boyfriend's voice is created using pitch-shifted vocal samples by Kawai Sprite.
• His design was created by PhantomArcade and evilsk8r during the original Ludum Dare 47 game jam.
• In the Game Over state, the player can press certain keys to make BF do a little idle animation before retrying.
